More Nifty Tricks for Your Taskbar

Useful little keyboard shortcuts for the taskbar
. When a program has a number of open instances, holding down the Control key while clicking repeatedly on its taskbar button allows you to cycle through all the instances.
. If you want to pin a file to the jump list of the program that opens it, usually, you would open the file, right-click on the program's button on the taskbar, find the name of the file on the Recent segment of the jump list, and pin it. There's a much easier way, though -- you simply drag the file that you need to see pinned, and drop it on the taskbar icon for the program.
. The scroll wheel button, when used on any program on the taskbar, opens a new instance of it.
. Right-clicking on the taskbar button of a program opens its jump list. There's another way to do open it, though - you can put the mouse arrow on the taskbar button, hold down the left mouse button, and then move the mouse upwards.
When Windows won't let you pin something
Windows Vista onwards, the taskbar only allows the pinning of programs - not folders. It can be convenient to be allowed to pin individual folders to the taskbar, though -- you get single-click access to folders that you frequently use.  There is a trick that helps you pin folders:
. Open a new Notepad file, and save it to your desktop by the name of the folder that you would like to have pinned to your taskbar.
. Close the file, right-click on its icon, and select Properties . In the name field, change the file extension from .txt to .exe . When Windows asks you if you're sure about changing the extension, click Yes .
. Drag the file to your taskbar and pin it there.
. Find the folder that you need to have pinned to your taskbar, right-click on it, and select Properties . Copy the path in front of Location .
. Right-click on the icon of the file that you've pinned to your taskbar, right-click again on the name of the file on the jump list, and select Properties . In the Target field, paste the path of the folder that you've just copied, add a backslash at the end, and add the name of the folder. Once you hit OK , clicking on the icon will open the folder that you want. If you'd like to change the folder icon, you can always do it by going to the same Properties dialog box.
